A MacGuffin is an object, event or character in a film or story that serves to set and keep the plot in motion despite usually lacking intrinsic importance. Originating with writer Angus MacPhail, a frequent collaborator of Alfred Hitchcock, the MacGuffin was popularized by them, and many more movie makers, in their films.
